Among the hundreds of species of Gomeh, it is accepted that Yocheved made the basket for her infant son Moshe out of papyrus. Today, papyrus can be found in the Hula Nature Reserve, the first nature reserve established in the State of Israel in 1964. In fact, it is not truely a nature reserve, rather a reconstruction of the Hula swamps. In the 1950’s, Israel drained Lake Hula and its swamps to create agricultral land. Due to the lobbying of conservationists, it was decided to recreate swamps in a small portion of the area, and papyrus was re-planted.
