As the name implies, Herodion was built by King Herod. It served as a fortified palace and also as Herod’s mausoleum. At Herodion, one can see the remains of Herod’s palace, including an ancient bathhouse, as well as the remains of one of the oldest synagogues in the world. After more than thirty years of searching, archeologists revealed and uncovered Herod’s mausoleum.0
Looking south from the top of Herodion, one can see the modern communal settlement of Tekoa, which is located northeast of the site of the biblical Tekoa, and southwest of Herodion. As we read in the opening posuk of Sefer Amos, Tekoa was the hometown of the Prophet Amos.0
