Parashat Reeh specifically names 14 animals, 10 of which are kosher.0
Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo presents many of the animals mentioned in Parashat Reeh. While the zoo does not limit itself to Biblical animals, and presents well over 2000 animals, representing approximately 270 species, one of the zoo’s primary goals is preserving and displaying animals native to Eretz Yisrael which are mentioned in Tanach.0
Like any zoo, the Biblical Zoo provides information on each of the species presented. But uniquely, for each species mentioned in the Bible, the Scriptural reference is added to the basic information on natural habitat, etc.0
The zoo has a section called “Land of the Biblical Animals”, which includes species of animals which were found in Israel in the times of Tanach and are no longer found in nature here. Among the animals in this section of the zoo is the yachmur (Persian fallow deer), which is mentioned in Parashat Reeh.0
Thanks to breeding the yachmur in the zoo, it has been possible to re-introduce it to its natural habitat in Israel.0
The zoo’s visitors center is housed within a wooden structure which resembles Noach’s Ark. The center has computer stations which provide more in-depth infromation on animals mentioned in Tanach.0
